Eddy Thomas - Contributed

Eddy Thomas, co-founder of the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC), died at his home in Montego Bay, St James, last Thursday.
The National Dance Theatre Company has expressed condolences to his family as its own membership mourns the loss of what it calls a "visionary man - artist, dancer, choreographer, designer, composer and musician".
Thomas, along with the late Professor Rex Nettleford, co-founded the NDTC with 16 other founding members at the time of Jamaica's Independence in 1962.
Prior to the NDTC, Eddy Thomas co-created the Roots and Rhythms Show with Nettleford in celebration of the nation's thrust towards Independence.
His Eddy Thomas Dance Workshop, which was formed years prior, was the foremost training ground for the development of legendary Jamaican artistes.

Of note are dancers who later joined the NDTC, including Bert Rose, Barry Moncrieffe and the late Mavis Stoppi, as well as celebrated musicologist, performer and NDTC musical director emeritus Marjorie Whlyie, who played piano and danced with the workshop in its early days.
Thomas' artistic intelligence and influence traversed the Jamaican theatre spaces as choreographer of several pantomimes for the Little Theatre Movement.
With the NDTC, he was known for the creation of memorable dance works like 'Legend of Lovers Leap' and 'Kingston 13'; for his musical compositions; and as a designer for backdrops and costumes on 'Plantation Revelry' and 'Legend of Lovers Leap'.
He was also the first Jamaican to attend the Martha Graham School in New York.
In conveying the sentiments of the company, NDTC's artistic director, Barry Moncrieffe, said, "The NDTC would not exist today, nor would it be the culturally significant institution that it has become over five decades had it not been for the vision and work of our co-founder, Eddy Thomas. His multidimensional talents were undeniable in the adaptation and expression of our cultural identity as Jamaican people through theatre arts. He was an inspiration to us all and will be missed, but never forgotten."
The NDTC will mount its traditional Easter Sunday morning showcase, on April 20, in tribute to the life of Eddy Thomas, Moncrieffe added.
Thomas is survived by his sister Marjorie, nieces, and nephews.
