AN Elegant Affair Events executed the seventh annual Youth View Awards, on February 1, 2014, at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
The Youth View Awards serve as the premium entertainment awards show in Jamaica, and was headlined by international recording artiste and Disney's Shake It Up actress Zendaya.
Zendaya performed two songs, including her Billboard chart staple Replay, to a resounding feedback from her Jamaican fanbase.
During her set, she brought out upcoming American R&B singer-actor Trevor Jackson, who swooned the many ladies in attendance with his stellar vocals.
Miss Kitty, who took home the Media Personality of the Year award, hosted the proceedings with interactive emceeing perfect for the younger demographic of patrons. Her entrance included dancers draped in African and Meso-American influenced outfits, with Miss Kitty receiving gleeful responses to her flexible dance moves.
This was followed by T.O.K's performance of their popular comeback single Shell It Down on the Bumayae riddim by Major Lazer.
UIM Records received the Producer of the Year nod, with Bugle performing their single Nuh Compatible with hilarious projections of popular former celebrity couples.
Jah Bouks and Popcaan did good sets, with Popcaan raising the roof with his Summer Song of Year winning number Unruly Rave and other Fyah 105 FM favourites.
Tifa, Konshens, Chronixx and Vybz Kartel took home multiple awards, and ZJ Bambino won Favourite Selector. Chromatic, RD Studios, and QQ were also winners for the night. Mystic and Shady Squad once again claimed the top spot for favourite dancers, and Kevin Downswell proved that the power of gospel music can match those of secular genres, with a standing ovation for his performance of Stronger.
Vocally, the most impressive of the night was Jody Blake's tear-jerking rendition of Miley Cyrus's Wrecking Ball. Alaine also showed her vocal prowess and piano skills when performing Shine Your Light with I-Octane.
I-Octane closed the night with a string of radio favourites such as Dem A Pree, Man A Suffer Too Long, and Like I Do.
He spontaneously brought Zendaya on stage and serenaded her with his reggae ballad L.O.V.E. Y.O.U. His uptemo dancehall singles Wine And Jiggle and Happy Time solidified strong responses from the crowd that made him the most well received act for the night.
The Youth View Awards dancers rivalled I-Octane in crowd response, with eye-catching choreography to contemporary dancehall and hip-hop numbers.
Rising acts Kalado, Gaza Slim, and Samantha J all performed, with Samantha J receiving the statue for Favourite Breakout Act.
Kalado showcased his budding catalogue, which includes radio burners Good Good Bring Life and Make Me Feel. Samantha J performed Tight Skirt and debuted her new single Hot Gal Anthem.
Jah Cure inserted a history lesson during the awards show, with dedicative covers of Bob Marley and Dennis Brown classics, earning more stripes for the reggae crooner. His own single Island Girl was recited by a large number of patrons in a harmonic fashion.
The 2014 Youth View Awards were another instalment of an event that continues to grow year by year as one of the most critical productions on the entertainment calendar.
