Minute silence in Sydney for Paris victims

A GATHERING will be held at Sydney's Hyde Park to hold a minute's silence at exactly the same time as France stops to remember those killed in the Paris massacre.
AS night fell across Europe on Wednesday, tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity for the 12 people killed by gunmen at the offices of satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo.
In Australia, bouquets of flowers were being laid at Sydney's French consulate, in a similar gesture seen after the recent deadly Lindt cafe siege.

NSW Premier Mike Baird labelled the Paris incident an "attack on freedom".

"It is an attack that ultimately will fail because communities around the world that cherish their freedom, such as those here in Sydney and NSW, will not be beaten by those sorts of acts," he told reporters in Sydney.

"But our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the friends, the colleagues of all of those caught up in that terrible, terrible tragedy."

A French journalist based in Sydney said Charlie Hebdo is "is an iconic magazine in France".

"I've been reading this magazine since I was very young, since I'm a teenager," said Flore Gregorini, editor of LePetitJournal.com.

"It's a very humoristic magazine, satirical.

"I'm very upset.

"It's really the freedom of speech which is targeted."

In a sombre televised address, President Francois Hollande declared a day of national mourning on Thursday - only the fifth in the past 50 years - after the worst attack on French soil in decades.

A minute's silence will be held across France at midday Thursday, and French people in Sydney are planning a gathering at Hyde Park North to hold a minute's silence at 10pm to correspond with France.

Flags at the French consulate in Sydney have been lowered to half mast and will remain lowered for the next three days.

A condolence book will be available from Friday for people to leave their messages.

Deputy Consul-General Oliver Le Van Xieu said France and Australia hold the same principles when it comes to freedom of speech.

"It's a symbol that has been attacked, as it was in Sydney, so we have to take adequate measures," he told AAP.
