Carl Gilchrist, Gleaner Writer
After two successful seasons in The Gleaner's Restaurant Week, Bamboo Blu Restaurant, located on the beach at Mammee Bay Estate, St Ann, is attracting widespread attention for its offerings.
Driven by the popularity of its grilled lobster, among other seafood dishes, Bamboo Blu has racked up positive reviews on Tripadvisor and from Jamaicans who visit the restaurant.
The fact that their chef from last year's Restaurant Week, Osmond Brown, won an islandwide competition among chefs from participating restaurants further enhances the reputation of Bamboo Blu.
Even more important though, the success of the restaurant appears to have brought new life to the once internationally famous development. There is renewed interest, one source says, in the Mammee Bay Estate, once a popular haven for international icons such as Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor, among others.
"People are seeing Mammee Bay again for what it really is," said one resident who wished not to be identified.
"Years ago, we were the favourite place for international stars who visited Jamaica, and the fact is, Mammee Bay still has the appeal. There is renewed interest in properties, not just for vacation, but people are seeking to own properties here. Crime is non-existent in this area, so persons like me are happy with what's happening.
"So the success of Bamboo Blu is basically a reflection of what's happening in the Mammee Bay area," he added.
Recently, Jamaica's international track star, Usain Bolt, spent a day at the Mammee Bay beach with friends, enjoying the facilities and excellent cuisine at Bamboo Blu.
As for the Tripadvisor responses, of 163 posts, an amazing 93 per cent gave the restaurant excellent to very good reviews, with 123 saying excellent, and 26 saying very good.
Said one late February post: "We came to the island visiting some friends in Ocho Rios and heard Bamboo Blu was a must-try! They were not kidding!!! We definitely gotta go back again sooon!!! The lobster and jerk chicken were AMAZING - as was the service - fast and friendly!!!"
Another stated: "Wonderful atmosphere, great service and awesome food. We were staying at the Riu Ocho Rios and met a couple who asked us to try the Bamboo Blu restaurant. The six of us went and had a great time. I had lobster. It was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the food very much. They had a gentleman singing and playing guitar. He was fantastic!"
Manager, Ceceil McConnell, was delighted with the reviews.
"When you come to Bamboo Blu, you receive a type of service that is second to none," said McConnell. "We offer wonderful service, wonderful food. That's what you get every time."
