The late Sharon Battaglia tending to her beautiful orchids.

On Sunday, February 9, the Ocho Rios Orchid Society (OROS) will dedicate their show, Jamaica's Bounty, to be held at Couples Sans Souci to the memory of their co-founder Sharon Battaglia.
A beloved figure in Ocho Rios, Battaglia, passed away on May 31, 2013. Battaglia was a free spirit and led a simple life but was passionate about her family, God, food and her orchids. As much as she loved raising her two sons and being a wife, her orchids were her second set of children. Her beautiful garden and care for the environment was an inspiration to others.
In l992, Battaglia, Pam Chong, Giusy Maffessanti, Cindy Stannard and Dolores Force, formed what is now known as the Ocho Rios Orchid Society. The goal was to fellowship and share the love of orchids while helping others grow. The society grew and successfully hosted more than 16 shows, some at the Ruins, the then Jamaica Grande, Walker's Wood and Couples Sans Souci.
Over the past 22 years, Battaglia cheerfully filled several posts - that of president, vice-president and secretary - at the same time actively participating in the planning and setting up of displays in Kingston, Montego Bay, Mandeville and, of course, in the garden parish.
Along with other members of the society, Battaglia used these opportunities to discover different species all across the island to add to their ever-growing collection. The society's adventures were not limited to Jamaica, organising trips to and purchasing plants from Thailand, Hawaii, Singapore, Malaysia, Panama and Florida.

Orchids hold the distinguished reputation of being one of the most alluring and exotic flowers. Battaglia's favourite was the phalaenopsis, also known as the 'moth' orchid.
As a tribute to Battaglia, her husband, Pierre, will donate a special trophy in her memory to be presented for the best phalaenopsis shown by an OROS member.
The show runs form 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature orchids and other exotic plants, vending, crafts, unique furniture by Gilbert Nicely and a parade and display of cars from the Jamaica Classic Car Club. The gate prize is a weekend for two at Couples Sans Souci.

As a tribute to Battaglia, her husband, Pierre will donate a special trophy in her memory ... to the best phalaenopsis shown by an OROS member.
