Australian police angry as tourists film Irishman's death

Police in Australia have condemned tourists who filmed the dying moments of an Irish backpacker who was killed in a car accident in the north Queensland city of Cairns.

Donal Bolton, 23, was weeks away from returning home to Ireland after spending a year in Australia when he and his fiance, Justine Walsh, were hit by an out-of-control vehicle as they sat on a bench in the city centre.
Senior Constable Scott Ezard, lead investigator at the Cairns forensic crash unit, said the pair had been in the tourist town for just one night and were waiting for a bus when the tragedy struck.
But in the moments after the crash, in which Mr Bolton was pinned to the bench, bystanders started to film the drama on their mobile phones rather than going to the aid of the victims, he said.
"It's an absolute tragedy, someone's been killed, and people are more concerned with taking photographs than helping victims," he said.
"It's a sad indictment on society, fairly morbid behaviour, just so they can stick it up on YouTube."
Mr Bolton, 23, of County Offaly, died at the scene. His 22-year-old girlfriend of five years suffered "bumps and bruises but is obviously deeply distraught", officers said.
Miss Walsh is due to escort her boyfriend's body back to Ireland for burial in the next two weeks.
Monsignor Tom Coonan, a priest in the Ballinagar area of Offaly, told the Irish Times that the family was in deep shock and heartbroken after the death of their youngest son.
"It's very sad, it's a huge tragedy," he said.
The 33-year-old driver, who suffers from a long-term medical condition, sustained a fractured vertebrae and was still undergoing medical treatment.
In the moments before the crash he was said by witnesses to be "frothing at the mouth" with his "eyes rolling back in his head".
"The driver does suffer from a long-term medical condition and he does receive treatment from the hospital from time to time," Mr Ezard said.
"It is unclear if the condition contributed to the incident - that's still currently under investigation."
