BUSINESS Mogul Maurice Facey was yesterday hailed as a Jamaican icon who gave selflessly of his time and resources to help the less fortunate.

The glowing tributes flowed as relatives, friends, employees and well-wishers paid their final respects to Facey during a thanksgiving service at St Andrew Parish Church to celebrate his 77 years of life.

"For him, the sky was the limit. It was he who painted the way forward as a director of Pan Jamaican Investments, and there was something very humble about his use of power," close friend Winston Stona said during his delivery of the remembrance.
Facey passed away last week Tuesday at the University Hospital of the West Indies after a brief illness.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips, hotel mogul Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, former United States ambassadors to Jamaica Brenda La Grange-Johnson and Sue Cobb, as well as a host of parliamentarians and businesspeople were among the packed church of mourners.
Facey, who headed Pan Jamaican Investments, was the chairman of Hardware & Lumber, First Life Insurance Company, and PanCaribbean Merchant Bank (now Sagicor Bank). He also held directorships in more than 20 companies.
"His negotiating skills were legendary. Up to the moment of his death all his energies were focused on returning downtown Kingston to its former glory. I hope we can honour him by continuing his vision," Dr Ralph Thompson said during his tribute.
Apart from his involvement in real estate, Facey also ventured into agriculture, horticulture, and tourism.
But it was his benevolence that was highlighted most during the service.
"Maurice believed that without commitment you could not learn to care for others more than yourself," Stona said.
Reverend Dr Robert Thompson, during his delivery of the homily, also paid tribute to Facey's unselfish streak.
"He was blessed with professional integrity, and in making money he never forgot his commitment to his church and the advancement of the poor," Thompson said.
He urged the congregation to use Facey's exemplary life as an example to live by.
"When you know that your future is guaranteed, then you begin to write your story in a different style. You can live in evil and not be consumed by it," he said.
Facey's remains were cremated and will be interred at a later date.
